Big bonuses available for transferring teachers

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Educators want to place the best and brightest in the state's 83 low-performing schools. But that takes money -- and lots of it.

According to the Commercial Appeal, teachers are eligible for a bonus if they agree to leave a stronger school for a "priority school" -- one that scores in the bottom five percent.

In the Mid-South, priorities schools are in the city of Memphis and Hardeman County.

The CA also reports that bonuses are supposed to help teacher recruitment in the Achievement School District, which is taking over more than a dozen low-performing Memphis schools this fall.

Eligibile teachers will get two payments of $3,500 from the U.S. Department of Education for signing up.

Teachers could forfeit their eligibility if they break their yearlong commitment or if students don't reach certain benchmarks.
