Sarah Simmons has a Voice -- and a love for Central BBQ

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Before the Voice catapulted her to instant stardom, Sarah Simmons was just a regular college student in her early 20's who liked hanging out in Cooper-Young and, of course, eating barbecue.

"Central BBQ is amazing. I miss it a lot but I don't want to see it just yet. I don't want to eat it just yet."

Her second-favorite? Double J Saloon on G.E. Patterson.

"Never tried until right before I left and I fell in love with it."

She performed around Memphis with her friends and classmates at Visible Music College in downtown Memphis. Not only did she play and live downtown, she also looked to some Beale Street legends for guidance.

"I've gotten to play all sorts of places from BB Kings with Blind Mississippi Morris," Simmons said.

"He's really a good friend of mine and he's really taken in a lot of us. He's taken in a lot of us that he really believes in."

This weekend was hardly relaxing for Sarah and fellow Memphian Kris Thomas.

Between interviews and clothing fittings - both singers had to pick a song to sing in the next live rounds beginning Monday night hoping it's what it takes to keep them singing.
