JACKSON, MS -

(WMC-TV) - An investigator for the Mississippi state auditor's office testified Monday during Southaven Mayor Greg Davis' questionable spending trial. She testified Davis made claims that were not true.

The Mississippi state auditor is trying to collect more than $70,000 in public money allegedly spent on personal matters.

The state of Mississippi arrived with reinforcements Monday. There were four attorneys from the attorney general's office and one from the state auditors office.

"I said, 'We have a receipt for $1,400.09.' You said that you entertained reps, and it's a clothing store. He said, 'I bought clothes for the reps,'" said investigator Karen Swain in regards to a trip Davis took to the Key West.

Davis and his family went to clothing stores with names like Flirt, French Kiss, and Jungle Paradise.

That trip started out personal, but became business and reimbursable when Davis said he met reps for a car dealership in Southaven. Swain said Davis was courting the reps to bring the landers car dealership to Southaven.

"He said he bought clothes that he had given clothes to the GM representatives," said Swain.

Swain also backtracked and said Davis triple dipped in city reimbursements. She later testified she was looking at the wrong documents.

The investigator said she asked for receipts from Davis for the Key West trip. She has never received anything.

Davis has since paid the money back for the clothes purchased in Key West.

A Southaven alderman also testified on the stand Monday. City alderman Greg Guy was questioned about approving Davis' controversial spending.

Davis sat on the opposite side of the courtroom with his attorney.

"I felt like I fell asleep at the wheel. I trusted everything he was doing was legitimate and correct," said Guy.

Guy testified that he, along with other aldermen, never bothered to check out expenses mayor Davis submitted for the city to pay.

Eventually, Guy had a change of heart and contacted the state about Davis' spending.

Greg Davis' civil trial resumes Tuesday. Davis and his partner Jansen Fair have both been subpoenaed to testify.
