MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The Memphis Police Department is asking for your help to identify a man who they believe tried to abduct a 74-year-old woman near a popular shopping center on South Mendenhall Road.

The woman told police she was loading things into her car when she was approached by a man who said he needed a ride to Nashville. She said she was not able to help him.

"I started to turn and he said, 'I've got a gun, get in your car,'" she said.

The victim, who wants to remain anonymous, told Action News 5 that she screamed and ran away, darting in and out of cars in the parking lot.

"That's what was so scary," she said. "Sometime around 2 a.m. you think that could happen to somebody, not in the middle of the day."

As she took off, so did the suspect. A witness took notice and began to follow the suspect and was able to take a photo of him.

Investigators are hoping someone may recognize the man from the photo. He is about 48 to 52 years old, between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall. He has brown hair and a receding hair line.

"I just hope they put more security in grocery store parking lots because that's what they do," said the victim. "They try to get old people."

Several business owners near Poplar Avenue and Perkins Road say they have seen the same man in the past few days.

If you recognize him, you are asked to call police at (901) 528-CASH.
