Corky's founder dies from heart attack

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Corky's Ribs & BBQ founder Donald Pelts has died as a result of a heart attack. He was 72 years old.

Pelts founded the renowned eatery on Poplar Avenue in 1984. Corky's has been serving up some of the best BBQ in Memphis ever since.

His first restaurant was so popular that Pelts added a drive-thru. He then expanded and opened more restaurants across the Mid-South and south, including Nashville, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

You can even order Corky's from anywhere in the world online and FedEx will ship it right to you.

Just this week, the writers at National Geographic listed their top 10 best barbecue joints and Corky's took the top spot on the list.

The funeral service for Pelts will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Temple Israel, 1376 East Massey Road. The burial will take place at Temple Israel Cemetery following the service.

News of Pelts' passing comes one day after the death of John Willingham, another prominent figure in the Memphis barbecue scene.

Willingham passed away Tuesday at the age of 80.
