MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Students at a Memphis high school are celebrating the success of one of their own as the Memphis Grizzlies get ready for another game against the Spurs.

Teachers and staff at Lausanne Collegiate School remember Marc Gasol as a student. He attended the school in 2001.

"He walked in the gym, and I just remember seeing this tall guy and I was like who is this?" said Lausanne graduate Karon Nash.

Gasol and teammate Karon Nash became fast friends even though Gasol didn't speak a word of English.

"It was a great experience with him because everybody embraced him," said Nash.

For two seasons, Gasol towered over his high school teammates and opponents.

"Even early on we could tell Marc was one of those guys who would set a goal and then not let up until he reached that goal," said Dean of Senior Class Brenda Robinette.

After graduating, Gasol went back to Spain to hone his skills. Students and faculty followed his progress and were thrilled when he joined the Grizzlies in 2008.

"He's that kind of role model that you want for your children. Not only is he a great athlete, he's a great person," said Robinette.

Despite his success, Marc Gasol has never forgotten Lausanne, and he continues to inspire the students at his alma mater.

In 2008, he was there when the school retired his jersey.

The Grizzlies play the Spurs Tuesday in San Antonio at 8 p.m.
