Tyler Griffin Wins SoCon Player of the Week Honors

CHARLESTON, SC -

Tyler Griffin returned from a fractured foot last Wednesday and turned in a four-game performance that has earned him Southern Conference Player of the Week honors.

The Citadel junior right fielder missed 18 games with the injury suffered in a collision at first base against South Carolina on April 9. But he hardly missed a beat after rejoining the lineup at Charleston Southern, going 10-for-17 (.588) with two doubles, three home runs, 13 RBI and five runs scored.

In his first game back, Griffin served as the designated hitter and went 3-for-4 with two home runs and tied his career high with five RBI in a 21-6 win over the Buccaneers. That marked his second two-homer game of the year, going along with the three he hit at North Florida on Feb. 22.

In the three-game series at UNCG to conclude the regular season, Griffin returned to his regular right field spot and had a pair of three-hit games, giving him three on the week. In the middle game of the set, he had a two-run double and a three-run homer to again match his career best with five RBI. He doubled twice and knocked in two more runs in the series finale.

The big week lifted Griffin's season batting average .310 with 11 homers and 43 RBI. He joined Bo Thompson (14) and Joe Jackson (12) as Bulldogs with double figures in home runs, only the third time in school history that three players have hit 10 or more in a season.

The Citadel opens SoCon tournament play Wednesday at 10 a.m. against Appalachian State at Fluor Field in Greenville. The Bulldogs enter the tournament with a record of 32-24 and are the fourth seed after finishing 18-12 in league play during the regular season.
