MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC TV) - $1,000 from an elderly couple in Hernando, MS.

A bachelor in Blytheville, AR, donated $200.

Two-and-a-half hours into the Action News 5 Oklahoma Spring Tornado Fund drive, Mid-Southerners had donated more than $36,000 in cash and credit to the American Red Cross -- every cent dedicated to Oklahoma's relief efforts.

"We are in awe tonight," said Laura Vaughn, executive director of the Mid-South Red Cross. "That is the quickest way we can provide food, clothing, shelter and all of the necessities that they need."

Local businesses loaded up, too.

Newby's, 539 S. Highland St., organized Memphis Grizzlies watch parties and lit up Facebook to marshal staff, volunteers and donors for a donated goods drive. Come Friday, a 53-foot trailer will depart the U of M-area bar and restaurant to deliver stacks of supplies to Moore, OK.

"People are coming with stuff you know they can't necessarily afford," said volunteer Tammy Canale. "They have six boxes of diapers and cases of baby wipes, and they've gone and they've spent their money and got them. It's wonderful for the victims of Oklahoma."

Money and credit donations are still the best way to assist the efforts. Only give to accredited charities like the Red Cross. Check accredited charities with the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator and your state's charities regulator.

Do not give to unsolicited requests from phishing e-mails, smishing texts or telemarketing calls with "spoofed" caller ID's. Always research a charity, then initiate the transaction.
