Last day of school means last day of MCS

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Wednesday is the very last day of school for students and also the last day of the Memphis City Schools system.

The Memphis City School district has been in operation since January 1869, and now, it is no more.

As she opened the door to Coro Lake Elementary for the last time, Kierra Luster could hardly hold back her tears.

“I was teary eyed at first to walk back over here but I really wish it were still open. I didn't want it to close. It's really a good school,” she said.

Luster attended Coro Lake.  She just graduated from Whitehaven High School and came back Wednesday to walk the halls one more time.

She says she has been reflecting on the closure of her school and school system.

“I see familiar paintings on the wall, familiar stairwells. I would I could go back and relive these moments,” said Luster.

Coro Lake is just one of four elementary schools closing as a result of low enrollment.

This is also the last day of Memphis City Schools' existence.

“It's been great. I've had four principals. It's been great,” added first grade teacher Yuvonia Mardis.

Mardis started teaching in the Memphis City School system 27 years ago.

She has also been at Coro Lake the entire time and credits much of her success to longtime principal Catherine Mitchell.

“Wherever my new home is, I'm gonna make the same family I'm leaving because we have had a family atmosphere here,” Mardis continued.

For Coro Lake's Principal Arcinko Smith, Wednesday was also been bittersweet because she, too, attended Coro Lake as a child.

“I'm happy to have been able to come back and serve this community as the building principal because its my alma mater,” explained Smith.

Again, Wednesday marks the end of Memphis City Schools' 144 year legacy in our city.

In all, 194 schools will now be transitioned into the unified school district.
