First tornado victim laid to rest; Red Cross volunteers find purpose

MOORE, OK -

(WMC-TV) - In Oklahoma, friends and family gathered for the funeral service for a 9-year-old girl killed by Monday's tornado.

Antonia Candelaria is the first victim to be laid to rest.

Governor Mary Fallin says a memorial and prayer service will be held Sunday evening for anyone who wants to attend to remember all of the victims.

Thunderstorms are slowing the tornado cleanup effort in Moore Thursday. The storms produced hail, heavy rain, and high winds. And more severe storms are predicted for Thursday night, with the possibility of tornadoes.

Action News 5's Lauren Squires met up with three Memphis volunteers on their first day of deployment in Oklahoma.

When disaster strikes, people like Linda Bomes and Janelle Wynn are great people to have around.

"We're one of the first on the ground," said Bomes. "And we're here for these people."

Both women, on a moment's notice, gave two weeks of their time with the Red Cross to help out the tornado victims in Moore, OK.

"I do this because it's a chance to give back. If something like this happened to you, you would want somebody there that's go you back to help you. And that's what we're down," said Bomes.

On Thursday, they spent the day working a stationary aid station in the Target parking lot. They handed out food, drinks, and supplies. It is a small, but important task for a community that is picking up the pieces.

"At least help them to feel like they're gonna recover and get back on their feet," said Wynn.

The Red Cross volunteers' jobs will likely change day-to-day.
