(WMC-TV) The Shelby County Election Commission set July 16 for the municipal school referendums in the Memphis suburbs.

They approved this date for suburban voters to decide whether to have municipal districts.

The decision follows several weeks of work by suburban city councils to pass appropriate ordinances.

Last year's affirmative votes to form municipal school districts in all six suburbs were struck down.

New elections come with new expenses.

Municipal school referendums will be followed by another round of school board elections in each municipality. Those dates will be set by the election commission later.

The July 16 vote to decide on municipal districts will not include sales tax hike since those were previously approved.
