(WMC-TV) - The nation honors the men and women of the U.S. Military who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Mid-Southerns placed flags and flowers on more than 42,000 headstones at the Memphis National Cemetery to remember fallen service members.

A Mid-South family makes visiting their fallen loved one a holiday tradition.

Katie Allen Carter said her father and uncle served during World War I. Her nephew, Earnest Allen, said his father served during World War II.

"They fulfilled their duties and the fact that they fulfilled their duties is enough in itself to be honored," said Earnest.

"Freedom isn't really free," said Memphis Mayor A C Wharton. "Someone had to die for it, and I just wish we could get more. There are thousands of us who'll be off work tomorrow, but only a handful in some way will pause for a minute to say thanks to the men and women who have died for all this great freedom that we enjoy."

Memorial Day observations continue across the Mid-South Monday.

One of many events includes a three mile run at Overton Park to honor veterans.

Organizers said there are more than 1,500 Memphis heroes who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

In Southaven, mayor Greg Davis and many other North Mississippi city leaders met at the 19th annual memorial day service at the Twin oaks funeral home.

At the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, a tribute flyover took place late morning. Several city, county, and state leaders attended.
