Continued violence in Clarksdale kills soldier

CLARKSDALE, MS -

(WMC-TV) - A north Mississippi soldier just months away from his deployment in Afghanistan has been murdered. Police said the man was an innocent bystander who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

On Memorial Day when the nation remembers those who served our country, a Clarksdale family prepares to bury their soldier.

Army National Guard specialist John Wilson was killed in a shooting outside a nightclub. He is the latest victim in a town full of recent violence.

His family is pleading for an end.

Combat Engineer John Wilson and his wife Latasha only made it 14 months.

"We said we would spend the rest of our life together," said Latasha.

Wilson's mother, Mary Morris, said he had just pulled up in his car.

Outside a nightclub, Clarksdale police said someone started firing. Bullets hit Wilson, two young women, and a man.

Wilson died making this Memorial Day almost unbearable for his family.

"I would have rather it be me than him, just to give him a chance," said Morris.

A chance to raise his three children, and four stepchildren, and to again serve his country in Afghanistan.

He made it through a year in Iraq, but fell victim to the continued violence in Clarksdale.

"The enemy is using them, and most people think that killing someone makes them a better person," said Morris.

Ten people were hit in six separate shootings in Clarksdale last week. Two died, and one was Wilson.

The family begs the young people of Clarksdale to help each other.

"It's nothing that the law enforcement can do, judges can do. It's got to be within the people's hearts behind the guns," said Morris.

Funeral arrangements for John Wilson are still in the works. Clarksdale Police said they have a person of interest for the shooting. If you know anything about these crimes, call 662-621-8151.
