CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Two children who were left home alone were killed in a Montgomery County house fire Monday morning.

The fire was reported at 11:22 a.m. in the 2600 block of Devers Road in the Southside community.

Police said a woman who lives across street called emergency personnel when she saw smoke.

The victims were identified as 11-year-old Alexander Nash and 12-year-old Kemara Nash.

Investigators said the children were left unattended while their mother went to the store with her youngest child.

"They were in the back bedroom, so they really didn't have any other way to get out," said uncle George Williams. "It probably got on them so fast they didn't even have time to react."

By the time firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed, and a deputy was slightly injured by glass in an attempt to pull a child from the burning home.

"Anytime you have somebody inside it's tough on the fire department. Knowing somebody's inside makes it rough on them," said Montgomery County Fire Chief Jerry Buchanan.

The American Red Cross said it is assisting the family with food, shelter and emotional support, as well as water for emergency responders at the scene.

"We have to bond together. We're all in this together. Even as a pastor, I had to ask God why," said the Rev. Dextor Mines.

The cause of the fire has not been released.

Both children were supposed to start classes at Montgomery Central Middle School in the fall.
