COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -

It's been nearly three years since a retiree was shot and killed in his car along a rural road in Maury County, and investigators are asking for help in solving the cold case.

"He was in the driver's side and he was slumped over," said Maury County Sheriff's Sgt. Jerry Williams.

A couple going home from dinner Nov. 9, 2010, found 67-year-old George Foster shot multiple times inside his car in what seems like the middle of nowhere along Richardson Lane.

Police say he left his home at 3 p.m. that same day to check on the construction of a nephew's home and believe he pulled over on the way back.

The shooting wasn't a drive-by, and detectives know the car had no trouble, so he didn't break down.

"One of the theories is, yes, he could've pulled over to meet someone," Williams said.

Foster was also known to be a slow driver.

"You have some possibility of road rage. If someone was behind him, this is in a rural part of the county - not a lot of chances to pass someone," Williams said.

The case is complicated. One of Foster's nephews was killed two years prior, and Foster had also been giving money to a female co-worker.

Police have checked out any connections.

"He was the kind of guy that had been described to us that he'd give the shirt off his back. He would help anybody," Williams said.

That weighs heavily on the minds of detectives who are still looking for some closure for the community.

"Help this family out to find out the truth of what happened to George. And the other side of it: there is someone who murdered someone that's still out there," Williams said.

The family of the victim did not wish to speak on camera for this story.
