Donorfest event encourages blood donations

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Mid-South Lifeblood is going all out this week to encourage you to donate. The event is called Donorfest and the goal is to make sure enough blood is available if you or someone you know needs it.

Action News 5 had a crew at a donation center Sunday morning from the minute Lifeblood's annual Donorfest started.

Jessica Devers donated blood, "It feels good, doing something good."

People began lining up at various Lifeblood donation centers around the city of Memphis.

Lifeblood staffers say the short time you spend donating at this year's Donorfest could help you or someone you know.

Lawana Tate with Lifeblood told us, "We supply all the hospitals, so blood is always a big demand. You got cancer patients; you got burn victims, heart surgeries and kids at Lebonheur. We're trying to support all those hospitals to help them out."

Donorfest is Mid-South Lifeblood's biggest blood collection drive of the year.

The collection goal this year for Mid-South Life blood is 1963 units of blood. Officials with Lifeblood chose that number because it has special significance for Lifeblood.

Tate says, "It goes all the way back to when we first got established in Memphis and so that's the number that we want to work on each year."

This is Jessica Devers' 6th time donating to Lifeblood and she is encouraging everyone to give blood.

"I'm probably going to take a picture and paste it on Facebook and like hey ‘Donorfest, it's a great thing,'" Devers said.

Donorfest will run Sunday through Saturday, June 15th at all of Lifeblood's donor centers; click here to find times and locations.
