MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A judge found the estranged husband of Heather Palumbo-Jones mentally competent and fit to stand trial. This comes after the judge ordered a mental evaluation for Chris Jones in May.

Friends of Heather Palumbo-Jones sat in a Germantown courtroom Wednesday as Chris Jones walked into to hear the results of a mental evaluation.

Jones, through his attorney, waived his preliminary hearing. Palumbo-Jones' friends do not mince words about how they felt seeing him in court.

"There is a monster inside that hurt our friend and we want justice," said friend Melissa Smith.

Palumbo-Jones' friends vowed to show up at every court hearing for Jones who is charged with second degree murder in the death of his estranged wife.

Heather Palumbo-Jones disappeared April 15. At that time, Chris told investigators he had no idea what happened to the mother of his two children.

Several days later Palumbo-Jones' burned body wrapped in an air mattress was discovered in a secluded area off Highway 64 east of Collierville-Arlington Road.

Palumbo-Jones' friends cringed when Chris Jones pleaded not guilty to her murder Wednesday.

"Like it was no big deal just like he looked the day she was missing like it was nothing," said friend Cari Cooper.

Jones has worn the same street clothes for each of his three hearings. Prisoners have the option of wearing street clothing in court.

Palumbo-Jones friends said they want to see Chris Jones in an orange jump suit that is prison issued.

Chris Jones' case will now go to a grand jury for possible indictment.
