Campers beating the heat at Roddy White Football camp

Posted: Updated:

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - In this heat, you can work up a sweat just by walking outside. So can you imagine running drills in it?

More than 400 local and out-of-state children are doing just that for the chance to meet and learn from a former James Island football player who made it big with the Atlanta Falcons.

"The heat index, I think, here is 101 degrees," says co-camp director Michael Stovall. "We can actually feel the heat but the kids playing at the time they want to go, go, go so about every 7-10 minutes we have to stop and hydrate them. It's very important."

It's the third day of the fourth annual Roddy White football camp at James Island Charter High School.

Outside it feels like 105 degrees.

"Number one priority is hydration," says Stovall. "They have that water bottle that's full as well as that hydration machine which has about 6-8 hoses with ice and water."

Even though it's hot, rising eighth grader Qumari Jackson says he's not slowing down.

"I feel like I'm learning," says Jackson. "They're actually pushing us really hard, I like it."

The NFL player Jackson has come to learn from is Roddy White. Jackson says no high temperature could keep him from an opportunity like this. The Falcons top wide receiver agrees.

"I know it will make a difference in the kids lives every time you can be around guys you see as a role model," says White. "It gives them hope and the opportunity that one day I can be that guy."

White says during the last four years his camp has been up and running in the Lowcountry he's seen plenty of kids who would be able to don what he's done.

It just takes hard work.
