Mid-South man arrested in murder for hire plot

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – A Mid-South woman's world was turned upside down when she found out her boyfriend might have killed his wife.

It is a murder that happened two years ago in Marion, Arkansas.  Now the husband is behind bars and his girlfriend wonders who was living with her.

"I don't think he would do nothing like that," girlfriend Pamela Bell said. "He's real nice. We drove to Florida and everything. He was nice, paid for the whole trip."

And yet John Thompson is charged with the capital murder-for-hire of his wife, Danielle Thompson, who was discovered shot to death in the couple's Marion home two years ago.  Investigators said it looked like a burglary with the door kicked in.

Pamela Bell told me she met Thompson online. She said he moved to Lepanto about a year ago from Southaven and she moved in with him in his Lepanto home five months ago with her four children. She said she knew about his wife's murder.

"I asked him when I first met him. He said he didn't know nothing about it. He just knows it was a burglary," she said.

Bell got a shock Monday when investigators showed up at the Lepanto home with a search warrant.

She said they were in the house for hours.

"They found her wedding ring, a phone, and they said they found a gun," she said.

Investigators were in Lepanto at Thompson's house executing that search warrant at the same time other investigators were in Osceola at Walmart arresting Thompson.

Thompson is the manager and was at the time of his wife's death. He said he left for work around 5 a.m. the day his wife was murdered.

Pamela Bell has one question for John Thompson: did he do it?

"It's kind of scary because I was staying with him. I didn't know anything about this," said Bell.

John Thompson is behind bars in Crittenden County with no bond because of the capital murder charge.  There is no word if anyone else will be charged in this case.
