MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A 3-year-old child died Friday after being severely beaten by her mother's boyfriend, according to police.

The child was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in critical condition after the beating in late May.

According to police, Tony McKinney was baby-sitting his live-in girlfriend's daughter when the child was brutally beaten. Her mother was at work.

McKinney, 26, told investigators he "spanked her good".

The child was unresponsive when McKinney placed her in his Ford Mustang and drove her to the mother.

From there, McKinney dropped off the mother and daughter at Delta Medical Center.

Police arrested McKinney at home at the Hamlet Apartments shortly after the child arrived at Le Bonheur.

Doctors diagnosed lacerations to the child's kidney and liver, a ruptured bladder, and bleeding on her brain, which had also shifted 8 millimeters.

"I wish that people who took care of children, parents and others, had the courage to say I need help," said Nancy Williams with the Child Advocacy Center.

McKinney has been charged with aggravated child abuse of a child under six. Police said those charges could soon be upgraded to murder. McKinney's next court date is Monday. He is in jail on a $250,000 bond.
