MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A quiet night turned chaotic inside juvenile court Monday after a 16-year-old detainee used a squeegee and a mop handle to knock out a sprinkler.

The sprinkler system unlocked all the cell doors starting a fight inside the detention center. Around 50 juvenile court detainees were involved.

Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Council Larry Scroggs said they have reason to believe this was planned. He said one detainee had a clogged toilet, so a detention officer gathered a few boys to help with the cleanup.

When the officer turned away for a moment, the teen broke the sprinkler setting off the fire alarms.

The chaos surprised and concerned Gwendolyn Ray who has spent time in juvenile court.

"If he could get hold to a squeegee and a mop what else could another child in the facility get hold to? You know, next it might be something to stick somebody with, you know a knife, or something to harm another inmate there," said Ray.

Scroggs said officers were able to get the fight under control, but the mess left behind took several hours to clean up.

The teenager who triggered the sprinkler system is charged with felony vandalism. All the teens were moved to the south side of the detention center while the cleanup began.
