More than 700 lbs. of marijuana found in trailer

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Detectives found more than 700 pounds of marijuana in a hidden compartment of a trailer Tuesday.

According to the affidavit, the suspect, Jerry Pomilla, was driving a Chevy Silverado pickup truck with a large trailer eastbound on I-240. Police pulled him over for going 65 mph in a 55 mph speed zone.

Pomilla appeared nervous when asked for his driver's license. He told the officer he was going to Bristol, Tennessee for the races and that he was coming from Conroe, Texas.

He said there was a gun in the cab of the truck. At that time, Pomilla got out of the truck at the officer's request.

Pomilla did not have a gun permit.

When a detective trained in highway criminal interdiction arrived Pomilla would not make eye contact with the authorities.

The detective noticed inconsistencies in Pomilla's story.

A canine named Buddy was brought to the scene. He gave a positive alert for narcotics coming from the trailer.

Detectives on the scene knew from experience and training that many trailers in this length have hidden compartments to hide drugs.

Due to heavy traffic conditions, Pomilla and his vehicle were taken to a side street.

Detectives noticed a steel hidden compartment in the center of the trailer. Inside they found 66 large bundles that contained a leafy substance that later tested positive from marijuana. The total had a field weight of 726 pounds.

Pomilla was taken to 201 Poplar.
