Suspect shot during Murfreesboro burglary attempt

Posted: Updated:
MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A Murfreesboro homeowner took matters into his own hands early Thursday, shooting the person who tried to break in.

Officers say a suspect, Gage W. Dalling, 19, was attempting to break into a home just before 6:30 a.m. on West Clark Boulevard when the homeowner confronted him.

During a scuffle, Dalling was shot one time in the shoulder.

The suspect was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.

Police don't advocate taking matters into your own hands unless it's in self defense.

"Well, it's never OK to use deadly force to defend property, but in this case, what we understand happened is he was in fear for his life, and so what we have to do is look at several factors surrounding exactly what happened and then make a determination whether or not to present that to a grand jury," said Murfreesboro Police spokesman Sgt. Kyle Evans.

Dalling was charged with aggravated criminal trespassing and burglary. The homeowner was not arrested.
