(WMC-TV) - The Tennessee Board of Trustees approved 5.6 percent hikes for UT Knoxville, UT Chattanooga, UT Martin and UT's Health Science Center in Memphis.

UT Knoxville undergrads will pay more than $8,200 a year for in-state tuition, that is up almost $470 dollars. Undergrad in-state tuition at UT Chattanooga will jump up almost $350. It will be more than $350 dollars a year at UT Martin.

"We are essentially taxing the people who are trying to make a better life for themselves," said State Senator Jim Kyle of Memphis.

Kyle wants to increase the amount of costs the lottery pays out for its scholarship. It used to pay 78 percent of the tuition, right now with the tuition hike he said the lottery scholarship will just pay 55 percent.

Next legislative session Senator Kyle wants to change the formula.

"As costs go up the lottery scholarship goes up," said Kyle. "We have a surplus in the lottery fund of over $350 million, and that money ... If it is not going to [be] spent on lottery scholarships it can be used to spend money to reduce the increase in college tuition."

There are ideas to bring down college tuition in Tennessee. Lawmakers are expected to address those ideas when they meet in Nashville next year.
