MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The baby bonobo usually found wrapped around his mother's neck has finally received a name – Mobali.

The Memphis Zoo's newest addition was born on Mother's Day. It took a few weeks for zookeepers to determine the gender of the baby ape. A blue toy revealed Mobali is a boy during a special celebration.

Primate Keeper, Sandi Shoemaker, said Mobali will stay with his mother for the rest of his life – a mother who will rule.

"In the Bonobos, it's the females ... They will form together relationships with each other, and they rule the group and make all the decisions for the groups. And it is a little bit more of a peaceful society," said Shoemaker.

Bonobos come from the Congo and they are endangered. This is the second Bonobos born at the zoo – which is a rare occurrence.

The females have babies every 5 years.
