FRAYSER, TN -

(WMC-TV) – There is a developing story about re-development. A new effort was unveiled Saturday that focused on transforming Frayser by the year 2020.

Dozens of residents, elected leaders, and a newly installed neighborhood council filled the pews of Promise Land Church Saturday to hear details of the Frayser 2020 revitalization plan.

Frayser is one of only eight challenged neighborhoods nationwide selected for redevelopment through a component of President Obama's Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative.

Initiative Director Shep Wilbun told us, "He's trying to help neighborhoods take control of their own destiny, build the capacity to plan for themselves, and then to transform their neighborhoods into neighborhoods of opportunity."

Mayor A. C. Wharton says plenty of neighborhoods attempt redevelopment, but efforts often fall through when people lose interest.

He says Frayser's plan is built on a solid footing.

"The people who live here are the only ones who can make permanent change in this community and we're here to support them," said Mayor Wharton.

The Frayser Neighborhood Council's next meeting is Monday night. Click here to find more information on the Council.
