MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis Police Officer has been relieved of duty with pay pending an investigation into a shooting that took place early Saturday morning.

Officers Fredrick Reading and Kimberly Shannon were responding to an alarm call on the 2900 block of Wedge Cove around 3:20 a.m. They encountered a man with a shotgun after hearing a noise come from the back of the house.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Joe Willis, 29, pointed the gun at officers when they gave him verbal commands.

Officer Reading fired shots at Willis, hitting him once. Willis reportedly ran from the scene and was located at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. He was transferred to The MED where he is now in stable condition.

Willis is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, evading arrest, and theft of property under $500.
