Grizzlies officially announce David Joerger as head coach

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The Memphis Grizzlies have finally made it official, hiring Lionel Hollins' top assistant, Dave Joerger to take over the reigns of the team that went to the Western Conference Finals this year.

Grizzlies CEO Jason Levien saying it was an ‘exhaustive and thorough' process the team went through before finally deciding to hire from within.

Joerger has been in the Bluff City since 2007, first under Marc Iavaroni, then as Lionel Hollins' top assistant.

He knows how to win, leading his teams to 5 titles in 7 seasons as a head coach in the NBA's minor leagues before moving to the NBA ranks.

Since coming the Grizzlies, Memphis has established itself as one of the toughest defensive teams in the league under Joerger's defensive scheme. The Grizzlies were tops in the NBA in points allowed last season, and 2nd in overall defense, an identity Joerger says will not change under his leadership.

Joerger also adding he doesn't plan to change much about the way the team plays, saying simply they will be faster getting up and down the court.

The Grizzlies made their official announcement Thursday morning.

"We are thrilled to announce we have hired Dave Joerger as the next head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies," said Levien in a press release. "Not only do we think Dave will continue to grow the team's league-best defensive identity, but we believe we have one of the league's budding coaching talents to lead our team. We are happy the Joerger family will continue to call Memphis home for years to come."
