(WMC-TV) - Plans are in place for more than $400 million in airport improvements at the Memphis International airport. It comes at zero expense to taxpayers.

In addition, leaders shared information about their smart growth plan to keep Memphis relevant in the ever-changing airline industry.

"We are relentlessly pursuing not only air service, but customer service," said airport chairman Jack Sammons. "We're not going to be O'Hare, DFW."

Sammons said Southwest Airlines is coming. He said the staff is in constant talk with other low cost airlines.

"The fact that Delta is changing does not mean this airport is dead," said Memphis Shelby County airport authority chief operating officer Scott Brockman. "Roughly $480 million dollars in projects either starting, finishing, or in process right now."

Southwest Airlines serves a reminder to support airlines who come to Memphis and existing ones who expand in the city.

"Sign up for Southwest Rapid Rewards ... What it shows is that Memphis is embracing the southwest entrance into the market," said Brockman.

One in four jobs in the Memphis area are connected to the airport. Leaders hope more airlines and affordable flights will come to the city if there is more support more support from residents.

Andrew Douglas was the only member of the Memphis news media to meet with airport leaders about the plans in place to move Memphis forward.
