MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Hundreds of Memphians lined up near downtown Saturday to take advantage of a free gas giveaway sponsored by one downtown congregation.

Action News Five's Justin Hanson was downtown when the pumps started flowing.

It started with a short prayer around the gas pumps.

But that prayer soon led to people everywhere at the Exxon station at the corner of Danny Thomas and Poplar downtown.

Memphian Rosemary Giles said, "Then I had to be pushed in. Ain't God good."

She had been in line since 4 a.m.

"God is good, all the time. I have a son getting married today and I didn't have any gas and didn't know what I was going to do," said Giles.

In addition to free gas, members of Light of Glory International Church downtown fed hundreds of hungry Memphians.

Pastor Stephen Brown said, "Let's just be real, gas prices are going up, groceries are high, jobs are leaving. Delta just left. It's time for this. It's needed."

Along with free food and free gas, church members also gave away MATA vouchers.

"Its gas on God combined with miracles on MATA and feeding the community, what a church," explained Brown.

For many, this free gas came at a perfect time.

Memphian Shareco Franklin said, "I start work on Monday morning and getting gas here is a true blessing until I get my first paycheck."

Some waited in line since 2:30 Saturday morning.

The lines started forming along busy Poplar Avenue and then around the Memphis Union Mission.

The lines stretched down Washington and around onto Danny Thomas to the Exxon.

Everyone that talked to Action News 5's Justin Hanson said the wait was worth it as the congregation of Light of Glory International Church came together to help those in need.

"It's a true blessing, a true blessing," Franklin said.
