MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - UPS workers and members of Brown Baptist Church rolled up their sleeves Sunday to help give homeless families a decent place to call home.

In a few days, dozens of homeless families will begin moving in a housing complex to try to restart their lives.

"We have so many homeless people that are out on the street and these are really needed," said Toni Jackson with UPS.

Jackson and other UPS volunteers teamed up with members from Brown Baptist Church to get several vacant units in Estival Place ready for families to move in.

"We hope to do cleaning and painting and whatever else they need us to do," said Jackson.

Bringing homeless families into the units is part of a citywide program called Memphis Strong Families. Collaboration between MIFA, Community Alliance for the Homeless, North Memphis CDC, and several other organizations make the program a possibility.

Cornelius Sanders with North Memphis CDC said the goal is to house 100 homeless families – but that goes beyond short term housing for the homeless.

"And what we're doing is providing permanent ... housing versus transitional housing," he said.

Organizers said family homes like the ones in Estival Place are needed to fight homelessness. Single men used to make up the majority of homeless people, but because of economic-related hardships entire family are now without homes.
