MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A man was shot and killed by a Memphis police officer Monday evening.

According to Memphis Police Public Information Officer Sergeant Karen Rudolph, the suspect came out from behind a bush and began shooting at officers on Parkside Avenue in southeast Memphis. One officer returned fire, killing the suspect.

A number of neighbors called 911 about the angry man. Someone from inside the suspect's house also called police, saying that he was threatening to shoot officers.

"The gentleman, who is deceased at this moment, was claiming the neighbor had shot his dog," said Bonnie Listengart, who lives nearby.

"He was shooting inside the house," said Sgt. Rudolph. "The call taker could hear shots being fired. Neighbors were saying he's reloading his gun, he's shooting."

"Police got here and the gentleman was outside with his gun, shot at police, and you know what had to be done at that point," added Listengart.

"The suspect was shot and has been pronounced deceased on the scene," said Sgt. Rudolph.

Described in one of the 911 calls as a "mental consumer," police did not immediately identify the man, nor would they say whether officers had responded to the home for any reason in the past.

Nobody else was injured in the shooting.
