Supt. Hopson shares thoughts on new school district

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - It is day two of the unified school district in Memphis and Shelby County. Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools are officially one.

Leaders of the new district say they are committed to three things: student safety, success, and a seamless transition.

"It's a new day, and we don't take that lightly," said Interim Superintendent Dorsey Hopson.

Hopson celebrated the first two days of a new district, but had a clear message about the future.

"We're buttoned up. Schools gonna start, we're gonna do it efficiently and we're gonna do it in a way that's not going to be disruptive," Hopson explained.

Hopson says the focus is now on the students.

While there may be a few hiccups with student registration and transportation in the beginning, he expects to continue seeing gains in students' academic achievement.

"There'll be no changes in attendance zones, they'll be no busing. There's not gonna be a mass movement of personnel at different schools," Hopson added.

Hopson expects to have all the kinks worked out by Labor Day, if not before.

On Monday, his entire staff met and went over checklists in each department to make sure the transition is as smooth as possible.

"I hope the next 364 days go as smoothly as yesterday," he said.

The Shelby County School's website has been redesigned as part of the merger. It is now loaded with helpful information about the transition.
