LITTLE ROCK, AR -

(WMC-TV) - Several high school-aged cyclists are recovering after a driver hit them in Arkansas. At least one of seven injured cyclists was taken by helicopter The MED. One of the cyclists remains in critical condition, according to the group with whom he or she was riding.

The crash happened Tuesday night about 90 miles northeast of Little Rock.

State police say a car traveling north on Highway 17 struck the group of 13 cyclists heading the same direction.

This kind of accident hits home with local cyclists like Clark Butcher, who co-owns Victory Bicycle Studio on Broadway Avenue. He has been hit by a car and knows that it is a chance you take.

"You know, you always go back and think it doesn't matter if you're wearing a helmet, bright clothing, there's signage on the street," said Butcher. "You're still very inferior to motorists."

Butcher believes better education can only help so much, especially when drunk drivers may be involved.

The group of cyclists struck Tuesday night were in the middle of a cross country trip benefiting a youth summer camp program.

There is no word yet on whether the driver will be charged.
