Two workline inmates caught after violating opportunity

Posted: Updated:
(WMC-TV) Shelby County tries to continue to provide work opportunities as some inmates take advantage of the opportunity.

Just this week, two inmates tried to violate the work program. Inmate Daniel Webster managed to escape on a workline detail while using the phone.  While inmate Albert Howard returned as scheduled ... with a bag of weed hidden in his hair.

On an average day, around 300 minimum security, non-violent inmates are out in the community working to earn time.

"We want inmates working," said James Coleman with the Shelby County Division of Corrections.

One supervisor oversees no more than seven inmates on a workline detail.

"The individuals that are doing the supervision of the inmates are not all county employees of the corrections center," stated Coleman.

Both Webster and Howard picked up additional criminal charges. Coleman says both could eventually qualify for workline again, but not anytime soon.
