MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

They swore to serve and protect, and 10 years ago, two Wilson County law enforcement officers did just that with their lives.

Mt. Juliet police Sgt. Jerry Mundy and Wilson County Deputy John Musice were killed July 9, 2003, when trying to stop a woman who was leading authorities on a high-speed chase on Interstate 40 through Mt. Juliet.

On Tuesday, family, friends and total strangers came together on the somber anniversary for a memorial service and dedication of a monument in their honor at Charlie Daniels Park.

Musice and Mundy were laying out stop sticks on I-40 in an attempt to catch a woman evading authorities when she slammed into them.

Mundy and Musice left behind a total of 10 children.

"To get that phone call as the chaplain, 'We need you out here, they've been killed,' it's tough," said Mt. Juliet Chief James Hambrick.

"My biggest fear when it first happened was that people would forget," said widow Trish Mundy.

So, Trish Mundy requested a public memorial service to share in her family's very private pain.

"The only thing that's gotten us through the last 10 years is the support of the community has wrapped their arms around us," Trish Mundy said. "I find a lot of comfort in this knowing that people will still take time out of their day and their busy schedules to pay honor to these two men."

Former Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe said it's important not to remember how the two law enforcement officers died but how they lived.

The woman who drove the car that killed the officers, Fallon Tallent, is in a Memphis prison serving two consecutive life sentences for first-degree murder. She's the first person in Tennessee history to be convicted of first-degree murder with the weapon being a car.
