SHELBY COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, and Millington voters decided to create their own municipal school systems Tuesday.

See below for a breakdown of the results. For specific percentages click here.

  • Arlington: 94 percent voted yes
  • Bartlett: 91 percent voted yes
  • Collierville: 94 percent voted yes
  • Germantown: 93 percent voted yes
  • Lakeland: 87 percent voted yes
  • Millington: 74 percent voted yes

Suburban voters, that approved municipal schools last summer, returned to the polls Tuesday after a federal judge struck down the previous referendums. As many voters are excited about the opportunity for the city to have its own school district, they know work is just getting started.

"It's a journey a long way from being done, but like I've said from the beginning, we'll take it one step ... One destination at a time," said Germantown mayor Sharon Goldsworthy.

As voters in all six of Shelby County suburbs went back to the ballot box to redo referendums, the legal footing this time was firmer thanks to the legislature – though a few suburbanites were still not sold.

"There is certainly an argument to be made about working together and consolidating and not duplicating services," said Germantown voter Tom Boudurant.

Most parents disagreed at Collierville's busiest precinct.

"As you support local schools and local school systems, and having a source of funding. I think it'll be awesome," said Collierville voter Vikram Dias.

Millington voters approved municipal schools, but they had the smallest number of 'yes' votes among all six municipalities.

Proponents, including mayor Terry Jones, say they believe it is going to be a good thing for this community.

"Anytime that you go out and talk to developers, and people that are looking to bring businesses to your community, the first thing they want to know is ... Do you have an educated workforce that can come and fill those positions? And now we can say, 'Yeah, we have a good quality school system,' " he said.

But first there is more voting to do as municipal school boards must be elected, again. The municipalities will hold school board elections November 7.

Tuesday's election went off without a hitch at the Shelby County Election Commission. The election cost $225,000. The unofficial results will be certified July 31.
