FedEx holds pilot camp for teens interested in aviation

(WMC-TV) - Students can push the pedal all the way to the floor and learn to fly. They are not pilots, but they were for one Wednesday afternoon.

"When we first took off ... That was probably the most exciting part because I had to pull back on the thing and take off," said student Sharron Sharp.

Area high school students like Sharp and Darron Dowell are a part the Aviation Career Education camp.

"I plan to go to college and then maybe go to the air force and fly," said Dowell.

They are spending an entire week learning the ins and outs of being high in the sky with the help from people like FedEx captain Frank Wallace.

"Most of the major carriers are forecasting a shortage," said Wallace who is also the ACE camp director.

The goal of the program is to attract teens to careers in the aviation industry.

"They're telling me that I need to know a lot of math, science," said Dowell.

Lessons learned from the classroom to the cockpit help these young ones realize that the sky is the limit.
