MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A major theft of city equipment may cost Memphis taxpayers in more ways than one.

Many Memphians may not have noticed the city equipment kept in a corner of Overton Park, but some crooks certainly did.

Memphis Police say they got away with two zero turn mowers along with a bunch of other lawn equipment after a weekend burglary.

Robert Knecht is deputy director of the city's public works department. He said it could cost approximately $40,000 to $50,000 to replace the stolen items.

The stolen mowers were worth a combined 25,000, according to a police incident report. A $300 dollar chainsaw was also swiped, as was a $500 weed eater. Two blowers, an edger, tiller, and trimmer were each worth hundreds of dollars and were taken, too.

The stolen equipment is used to keep right-of-ways trimmed, and some of them could go untrimmed for now.

Police say the crooks crept in by cutting through a chain linked fence on the back side of the property. Then they got into a storage building by ripping out a window air conditioner unit.

"You can't rule out an inside person is involved ... Anything and everything is open," said Knecht.

So far, surveillance cameras have provided little in the way of a lead. But the city still hopes to recover, at least, the two mowers.

The city has serial numbers for each of the stolen items. Call CrimeStoppers at 528-CASH if you have any information.
