Fight to change beer ordinance in Mississippi

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Right before football season ... a fight to change one beer ordinance in Mississippi.

Under current law, the city of Oxford can only sell hot beer. Cold beer is not allowed to be sold anywhere other than in restaurants and bars.

Attorney Milton "Dee" Hobbs plans to address the Board of Aldermen to try to get them to change the rules.

"Once that's deleted, that subsection won't be a part of the ordinance, and refrigerated beer and light wine can be sold in gas stations and convenience stores" stated Hobbs.

Hobbs reasons repealing the ordinance will also bring more revenue to the city. Hobbs plans to bring the issue before the board July 23.

However, before the aldermen vote, the board must meet three times before changing a city ordinance.
