MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A $10 million lawsuit has been filed against the City of Memphis. It claims five Memphis police officers beat a woman while she was handcuffed.

Laquita Hathaway maintains in her lawsuit police beat her for no reason. Memphis police say she was the aggressor punching and biting officers after they were called to her apartment.

"I have never seen a woman beat so bad in my life by those sworn to protect and serve. It is unbelievable," said attorney Carlos Moore.

Photos of Laquita Hathaway show black eyes and bruises. She is asking for $10 million from the City of Memphis after she says several Memphis police officers beat her during an arrest at an apartment complex.

Police were called by Hathaway's live-in boyfriend July 3.

The boyfriend did not want to be identified, but said the two had been drinking. He said he and Hathaway had been arguing, so he called police.

"When I called them she started breaking dishes and bending up silverware," he said.

Police reported that she was holding a large knife in her hand when they arrived. She was ordered several times to drop the knife, according to the report.

This affidavit says Hathaway punched three officers and bit one of them.

Her boyfriend says she dropped the knife when police showed up.

"She dropped the knife and said, "Oh you're gonna shot me in front of my son' " he said. "All five of them charged her and started beating on her."

Hathaway's neighbor says she was there when it happened.

"She hit one of the officers. I 'seen' that. I made my girls go inside. She fought them all the way kicking and screaming the whole way to the car," said neighbor Jennifer Phillips.

Hathaway has a lengthy arrest record that includes two assaults.
