Grizzlies trade for Calathes

Posted:

(WMC-TV) - It's no secret the Memphis Grizzlies were not too thrilled with the play of 2nd Year Point Guard TonyWroten, who struggled with shooting and turnovers in the just completed NBA Las Vegas Summer League.

So the Grizz Front Office moves quickly to find help at the position to back up Starter Mike Conley.

The Grizzlies pick up the rights to guard Nick Calathes from the Dallas Mavericks.

It barely cost Memphis anything; in exchange, the Grizzlies lift the protection on the 2016 second round pick already owed the Mavericks.

The 6'6" former Florida Gator spent all of his professional career playing overseas, most recently for the Russian Professional basketball league, where he posted 12.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 14 games for Lokomotiv Kuban.

He was MVP of the recent Eurocup Tournament.

The 24-year-old was originally drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft.

The TWolves then traded Calathes' draft rights to Dallas for a 2010 second round draft pick.

A two-time Florida Mr. Basketball, Calathes played two seasons for the Gators, and was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Year in 2008.
