Andy's Got Your Back on change-of-address scams

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Postal inspectors warned private web sites offering change-of-address services are fronts for either stealing credit card information or charging unnecessary fees.

"Consumers are being scammed $10, $15, maybe $30 for changing their addresses online," said U.S. Postal Inspector Paul Krenn. "The postal service provides this service either free of charge through the local post office or for a dollar online."

Scambook, an online complaint platform, has received more than 300 complaints about the sites in the last month.

Postal inspectors said if you are moving, simply log on to MoversGuide.USPS.com or just visit your local post office and pick up a free moving kit.

"If they are dealing with financial institutions, medical providers or insurance carriers, they should change their addresses directly with those providers to make sure they continue to receive correct information from those organizations," Krenn said.

Report any dummy change-of-address web sites to PostalInspectors.USPIS.gov.
