VOICES will raise awareness about domestic violence

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A new group is forming to raise awareness about domestic violence in Memphis and Shelby County. The initiative is unique because it is made up of domestic violence survivors.

The new group is called VOICES and will be run through the Family Safety Center, located in Midtown.

Gwen Turner lost 20 percent of her hearing in one ear because of an abusive relationship.

"I spent 20 plus years on and off with a man who was abusing me at the time," she said.

She now works at the Family Safety Center, which provides shelter, legal advise, and orders of protection. It now provides the VOICES program intended to raise awareness about the impact of domestic violence through public education and actual survivors like Turner.

"And I know that feeling of embarrassment, distress, I know that feeling of not knowing where to go and who to trust," she explained.

VOICES officially launches Thursday evening and will immediately begin a media relations campaign aimed at helping more women, and men, who suffer domestic abuse.

Turner believes victims may be more willing to speak with actual survivors.

"At least they'll know what I'm going through, what I've experienced, at least they face or have faced what I'm feeling now," she said.
