Plans for first gun range in Lafayette county raises concerns

Posted: Updated:
(WMC-TV) - Neighboring property owners aren't thrilled with a gun shop who wants to build a public shooting range in Lafayette County.

The Murphy family wants peace and quiet.

"I got to deal with that noise. I put my life savings into this house to make it real nice like it is today," stated neighbor Murphy.

But, business owner Joshua Gregory and his company TGC outdoors have big business plans for the first public shooting range in Lafayette County.

"People have been waiting for me to get the funds together to do this," explained Gregory.

The shooting range could also be used for permit training and to test firearms. Currently, he shoots some rifles with silencers. Others, are a bit louder.

"Our current range has no way to stop that noise; so, the noise level now is a lot higher now than it will be once we complete this project," continued Gregory.

Gregory plans to try and muffle the noise with 12 foot beams and natural barriers about 30 feet below his store.

"We want to make sure we're not leaving any impact on the property around here," stated Gregory.

The county's zoning and planning commission voted to approve the range. The issue will go before the board of supervisors in August.
