Mid-South students fight to keep local high school open

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Mid-South students and supporters are fighting to keep one high school open.

Westwood High School has been open for 50 years; but, whether the school lives to see 51 remains to be seen. Attendance has been shrinking and the school board targeted Westwood and two other high schools for closure.

"I think its wrong... I think they should leave Westwood open because is really a good school," stated Westwood senior Dwanda Sample.

Students, business leaders, and community supporters are working in the community to host a block party this Saturday. The goal? To save Westwood.

Another Westwood senior thinks Westwood High School should remain open.

"Even though I'll be gone when they plan on closing it, I would like for my little brother to graduate from Westwood," said Tokia Abram.

The campaign called 'save our school' is passing out registration packets as well and encouraging more students to attend the school.

Businessman Kevin Rayford of Rayford's Hot Wings graduated from Westwood and is hosting the block party Saturday.

" We have seen so many people graduate from Westwood and now by closing it...(it) would just be devastating to the community," explained Rayford.

Supporters realize they face an uphill battle; but, are hoping for the best.
