Local neighborhood concerned about safety

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Residents in one Memphis neighborhood are concerned about cars speeding down their block.

They say they contacted the city and submitted a request for speed bumps back in 2009. Now, it's 2013 and still they have not received speed bumps.

"It's like a racetrack through here. They come through here in excess of 40-45 miles an hour... everyday," stated resident Billy Walker Senior.

Walker is the president of the block club at Loraine Road.

He and the other members of the block club wish drivers would drive the speed limit in their neighborhood.

"I have grandchildren also, I have two. I keep them away from the street," continued Walker.

The city estimates it is backlogged about 400 speed bump requests...with 150 additional requests coming in every year. Only about 15 to 20 percent of these requests meet the criteria.
