Humane Society sponsors walking horse show

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

After an abuse scandal rocked the Tennessee Walking Horse industry, the Humane Society of the United States is now a sponsor of a horse show right here in Middle Tennessee.

The World Versatility Show continues through this weekend in Murfreesboro, and it's put on by the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association.

The Humane Society has advocated against horse soring techniques that increase the animal's gait, but they say this show does things right by having an inspector certified by the Department of Agriculture.

"This is the future of show horses. It really displays their natural athleticism, intelligence and how versatile they are," said Jennifer Lonergan, with the Humane Society of the United States.

The show is also imposing new penalties for any contestant found to have abused horses.

However, critics say the Humane Society is only singling out their animals, and that the walking horse trainers have taken their own steps to clean up the industry.
