Memphis school fights to remain open by hosting picnic

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Westwood High School students and staff members are teaming up with churches, residents, and business leaders in a campaign to save the school from closure.

But, right now, the "Save Our School" campaign is hosting a block party to get the word out about their goal. Westwood graduate Kevin Rayford of Rayford's Hot Wings is holding the party in the parking lot of his restaurant.

When asked why Rayford decided to host the party in the parking lot of his restaurant...his reasoning was simple.

"We just want to give kids the opportunity...to know there's hope here and people are concerned about them," explained Rayford.

Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Pastor Melvin Watkins agrees with Rayford.

"We're here to save Westwood High School," stated Watkins.

Attendance at the school has been shrinking and the school board has targeted Westwood and two other high schools for closure.

Today's event hopes to encourage more students to attend the school.
