(WMC-TV) - A security guard hired to keep people safe on Beale Street was arraigned Monday morning after officials say she tried to kill a man while on the job.

Patrice Jones was charged with attempted second degree murder.

Police say she was on duty, working the entrance gate on Rufus Thomas Boulevard when she stabbed a man in the stomach with a pocket knife and then threw it down a drain.

According to an incident report, Jones told police that victim Michael Ebelee choked her, and that she was afraid Ebelee was going to kill her.

She stabbed him with a pocket knife she had found earlier in the Pepsi Pavilion and threw it in the sewer because she was frightened.

Performa Entertainment manages Beale Street but contracts out security to Black Lion security, a local company.

Neither companies returned Action News 5's request for a comment.

But life goes on at Beale Street, Monday a group of campers hit the area on a field trip. They say it sure beats the mall.

"It's usually a safe place," said counselor Michelle Malone. "We have Memphis police officers monitoring, securing the area. A place if history. A place of fun, excitement, great food, great atmosphere, friendly faces, the southern culture that you normally get down here in Memphis."

Jones posted $35,000 bond late Monday afternoon. She is due in court in a week.
